The gift of Light

The gift of Light

Candles are by far my best selling item in the shop.  They out sell any gift on a daily basis and it seems that our fascination with candles has not changed for thousands of years.  From Prehistoric Men and lets not forget the Ladies, dipping their tree branches in animal fat for better light in those dark, damp caves, to Egyptians lighting reeds for better light to study by and most likely keep the slave labour going, we really need to AGAIN, hand it to the Romans for creating the first wick candle.  If you'll pardon the pun , it seems the Romans had a Light bulb moment (haha if only they thought of that)  and decided that dipping a piece of string in animal fat was the way to go.  The ancient Chinese were soon doing the same thing and by Medievil times the castles were well lit.

Luckily we have progressed through time.  Beeswax came into use for a much nicer smelling candle and the Whales have been left alone by most of the Planet along with other animals that were used as a form of animal fat for the candles.  Paraffin wax was next in line, developed in 1830. It burned much cleaner, was odourless and more reliable. The latest and actually very new form of candle wax comes from the soybean.  The Soy wax candle which was only invented in the 1990's contains No toxins, carcinogens or pollutants which means our candles are less likely to trigger allergies. And no petrol-carbon soot like you get from petroleum-based paraffin candles. They are Longer lasting and Soy wax burns cooler which means that you can enjoy your soy wax candle for generally 30-50% longer than a paraffin candle.

So there you have it.  Not only a beautiful gift that is fragrant and looks good.  It remains a staple in Human life for pleasure, work and power cuts. A gorgeous statement piece for your home and a gift you pretty much can't go wrong with.  Candles have been given as gifts since their beginning, so why stop now. Let's keep our fascination with candles going.

Our Palm Beach collection candles, Castelbel and local Handmade Hidden Palace candles are all Soy based and beautifully packaged and available always at Chantilly.
